Joey Cepa is…

We Are The Local Crew collection takes women seriously, asking us to recognize the valor of their work, their pride and competence, but also to recognize them as people. Cepa’s art brings our attention to the low social and economic status given to female manual labour. The ‘unattractive and ill-fitting’ uniforms might be designed to make them anonymous, but Cepa pushes against this strategy to reveal each woman’s uniqueness. Yet even as the photographs encourages viewers to see each woman as unique, the repetition of the serious, determined, often tired look on so many faces makes clear that most female working-class labor is physically exhausting and often dangerous.

Portrait photography, or portraiture, is a type of photography aimed toward capturing the personality of a person or group of people by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait photograph may be artistic or clinical. If a portrait looks like it has more depth than a picture, it’s because it usually does have more depth and tends to offer a story better than a picture does.
